The RSOC is combining our popular boating and camping activities for a Saturday thru Wednesday five-day, four-night adventure at Vista Campground and Sailing Beach! Hopefully this will provide an opportunity for others to bring out their own boats and for us to do a little sailing and safety instruction. To accommodate those that can’t take time off work, we’re including Saturday and Sunday this year so please come out and join us! We had a great time the past two years and for those worried about the water being too cold, the water was warm enough for swimming last year and the evenings were pleasantly cool for camping with no mosquitoes!

We have reserved a prime beach and waterfront group campsite that’s nice and flat with plenty of shade, picnic tables, grills, a communal fire ring, drinking water on site, and a nearby bathhouse with hot showers and flush toilets. Firewood contributions for the fire ring are always appreciated. If you want to just participate in the Boat Day on Saturday, activities will begin around 11:00 a.m. and you will have to pay a $7 gate fee ($5 for seniors). If you want to camp, plan to check in after 4:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon (you can come earlier and join us at the beach for the boat day). Admission, parking, and campsites are included in the event fee. Folks don’t have to commit to all five days (since some folks must work) but anyone camping will be asked to pay per night per tent site. Last year the weather was warm and we had a great time camping, boating, hiking, visiting nearby breweries and distilleries, and eating dinner at one of the many restaurants in Pittsboro. There is also a motorhome/camper camping area immediately adjacent to the group campsite. If you are interested in that, you will need to book directly with the Park yourself.

We are planning on the following activities and possibly more as we firm up the itinerary:

Our usual Boat Day activities starting at 11 a.m. Saturday

Group potluck dinner at the campground

Sailing, including Learn to Sail and boat safety (the club has two sunfish sailboats and hopefully a Hobie catamaran

Kayaking, paddleboards, canoes (the club has one kayak and two paddleboards or bring your own)

Fishing (you will need your own gear and fishing license)

Smores around the campfire

Hiking at some of the local trails (vary from 2 to 8 miles)

Dinner/drinks in Pittsboro (Carolina Brewing, City Tap, etc.)

The interesting Carolina Tiger Rescue facility is nearby but it is almost impossible to arrange group tours. However, there may be spots available as part of their normal daily tours. Contact them directly for availability if you’re interested.

Directions: (from Raleigh) US 64 West towards Pittsboro, and left on Pea Ridge Road to Vista Point

Start Time: 4:00 p.m. Saturday, May 17

End Time: 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 21

Cost Member: $20 per night per tent site with a maximum of $60 if you stay 3 or more nights (includes entry, parking, and camping fees)

Cost non-member: add $10 per night
