The RSOC is combining our popular boating and camping activities for a Thursday thru Sunday four-day/three-night adventure at Vista Group Campground and Sailing Beach! Hopefully this will provide an opportunity for others to bring out their own boats and for us to do a little sailing instruction for anyone interested. To accommodate those that can’t take time off work, we’re including Saturday and Sunday this year so please come out and join us!  We had a great time the past three years and for those worried about this being too early in the year for watersports, the water was warm enough for swimming last year and this year’s event is even later in May.  This weather this time of year is almost perfect as the evenings are usually pleasantly cool for camping with no mosquitoes!

If you want to just participate in the Boat Day on Saturday, activities will begin around 11:00 a.m. and you will have to pay a $10 gate fee ($5 for seniors and veterans). If you want to camp, plan to check in after 4:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. Admission, parking, and campsites are included in the event fee. Folks don’t have to commit to all four days (since some folks must work); but, anyone camping will be asked to pay per night per tent site. Last year the weather was pleasantly warm and we had a great time camping, boating, hiking, visiting nearby breweries and distilleries, and eating one dinner at one of the many restaurants in Pittsboro.

We are planning on the following activities and possibly more as we firm up the itinerary:

¨ Our usual Boat Day activities starting around 11:00 a.m. on Saturday

¨ Group potluck dinner at the campground

¨ Sailing, including Learn to Sail and boat safety (the club has 2 sunfish sailboats and perhaps a Hobie catamaran)

¨ Kayaking, paddleboards, canoes (the club has 2 tandem kayaks and 2 paddle boards or bring your own)

¨ Fishing (you will need your own gear and fishing license)

¨ Smores around the campfire

¨ Hiking at some of the local trails (vary from 2 to 8 miles)

¨ Cornhole tournament

¨ Dinner and drinks in Pittsboro (Carolina Brewing, City tap, etc.)

There is an interesting Tiger Rescue facility nearby but it is almost impossible to arrange group tours. However, there may be spots available as part of their normal daily tours if you’re interested. Please contact them directly for availability.

Directions: (from Raleigh) US 64 West towards Pittsboro, and left on Pea Ridge Road to Vista Point

Start Time: 4:00 p.m. Thursday, May 28

End Time: 5:00 p.m., Sunday, May 31

Cost Member: $20 one night, $35 two nights, $45 three nights (cost is per tent site)

Cost non-member: add $10 to the total fee

The fee includes entry, parking, and camping fees. At the gate, tell them you are group camping with RSOC.
